Bay-Friendly Landscape Maintenance Training & Qualification Program

The Bay-Friendly Training and Qualification for Maintaining Existing Landscapes is a well established and successful 7 week, 24 hour training for public and private sector landscape maintenance professionals.

GOALS

⚫ Lay the groundwork for Bay Friendly Landscaping and understanding it as the context (i.e. the big picture) for training in their chosen area of emphasis.

⚫ Facilitate participants understanding of the principles and practices of Bay-Friendly landscaping and why they are included in an integrated, sustainable approach to landscaping.

⚫ Provide hands-on training on the practices that most directly support our mission and for which we have the expertise such as grasscycling, mulching, sheet mulching, use of compost and compost quality.

“This program focused and fleshed out my
education on all aspects of sustainable landscaping
in one course.”
— Gray Shaw, Arbor Artist

THE PROGRAM

The Training is based on the Bay-Friendly Landscape Guidelines: Sustainable Practices for the Landscape Professional.

The program enhances the participant’s knowledge of the Bay-Friendly principles and the many maintenance practices that allow professional landscapers to offer profitable and environmentally sound landscaping services. It provides landscape maintenance professionals who work in the San Francisco Bay Area with:

  1. Knowledge of Bay-Friendly Landscaping as an ecologically based, holistic approach to the management of urban landscapes.
  2. An understanding of the value of landscaping within the context of the San Francisco Bay ecosystem.
  3. Hand’s on experience with many cutting edge applications such as sheet mulching.
  4. An understanding of the connection between nurturing soil health, waste management, water conservation and air & water quality.
  5. A competitive advantage in the professional landscape maintenance marketplace.
  6. Support for expanding their business to offer Bay-Friendly Landscape maintenance services and to communicate to their clients about Bay-Friendly landscaping.
  7. Public recognition of their training and knowledge.

The program trains and qualifies individual professionals, not businesses. The qualification is valid for 2 years, after which time it is the responsibility of the individual to meet the requirements for becoming re-qualified by the Bay-Friendly Coalition.

“It’s a good program that unifies a lot of concepts clearly – and it’s a good way to meet people trying to do the same as you.”
— Andrew Packer, Acorn Landscaping, Inc
